Insulation is essential for any structure regardless of geography. Insulation prevents the movement of heat into or out of the home. The summer sun radiating on the roof will fill the attic with heat. Proper insulation in the attic will prevent the transfer of that heat into the home. In wintertime, the home’s heating system will fill the interior with heat. Once again, proper insulation will prevent the transfer of that heat and in this case transfer from the interior.

R-value measures how much the insulation will resist heat transfer, so the higher the R-value the higher the resistance. R-value insulation prevents heat conduction. Heat conduction in simplified terms is one object being heated and transferring that heat to another and so forth. Lacking insulation in the attic any heat conducted into the attic would warm the rafters and ceilings and conduct that heat into the home.

The country is divided up into temperature zones, for example, the warmest zone is zone one. The coldest zones are seven and eight. There are certain R-value recommendations depending on the temperature zone. R30 is recommended for use in zone six. Many cities and municipalities have building codes requiring specific R-values for attics, walls and floors. Before starting any insulation project be sure and check the local code requirements.

Rolled fiberglass insulation is the most common and cost efficient insulation. The insulation can be purchased in rolls that simply lay out between rafters, floor joists or wall studs. The paper or foil backing is stapled to the joists or studs to hold it in place. The rolls can be purchased in different widths and lengths and in high or standard density. The cost of R30 rolled standard density fiberglass insulation will average between $.39 and $.43 a square foot. The costs are retail costs to the homeowner. R38, for example, will average $.55 to $.60 a square foot.

Fiberglass insulation is either higher-density or standard fiberglass insulation. Eight inches of higher density insulation will provide the same R-value, for example, as 9 1/2 inches of standard insulation. High-density R30 fiberglass insulation will average between $.45 and $.49 a square foot. Therefore, the thickness is not always an indication of its R-value, but is based on the insulation’s density. The insulation packaging will have the R-value and standard or high-density clearly marked. Higher density insulation will also be heavier.

Much of the thermal resistance comes from the Thickness of the R30 Insulation used. Fiberglass is the most economical to manufacture. Tests for thermal heat resistance are conducted with the ambient temperature at 72 degrees Fahrenheit and no airflow. The advantage to high-density fiberglass is it requires less thickness to provide the same resistance. This makes it ideal in homes with cathedral ceilings where there is not any attic space. It is also easier to double the insulation in walls.

R30 insulation is ideal for finishing off the garage or workshop. Adding new insulation or replacing old insulation is the perfect weekend project. One person can easily install R30 insulation, and the installation does not require any specific tools or techniques.
